LoJack Technology Helps Recover Stolen Toyota Tacoma crossing U.S.–Mexico Border Twice in One Day

It started without even a sound. A residential crime in the early morning hours. A Toyota Tacoma vanished from a driveway in Oakland, leaving behind only shattered glass as evidence.

The owner called the Oakland Police Department, and within minutes, the truck’s VIN was entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database. What the thieves didn’t know was that the Tacoma came from the dealership with a LoJack GPS system already on board.

By the time the Tacoma reached the border checkpoint, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers had already been alerted and were watching.

The suspect made a sudden move, turning southbound in an apparent attempt to return to Mexico – but it was too late. CBP officers were in position. Working in sync with CHP detectives, they intercepted the Tacoma right at the border platform. The driver was detained and handed over to CHP’s Foreign Export and Recovery (FEAR) detectives.

The truck, undamaged, was returned to its owner – a recovery made possible by split-second communication and the LoJack LE system’s precision tracking.

Investigators also discovered the thieves had “cold plated” the vehicle with stolen license plates in a failed attempt to mask its identity.
