Making life easier for mechanical repair techs

By Garth Robbins, Lead Business Analyst, Solera, Inc.

Did you know Solera’s Identifix tells you which repairs have worked for thousands of other technicians?

Good repair technicians are hard to find. We want to do all we can to make their jobs easier. When a car has a problem, a tech will often start by plugging in a diagnostic device under the dashboard to look up fault codes. Several commercially available solutions in our market today already identify issues and recommend parts that are commonly replaced. This is a step in the right direction, but we know that “throwing parts at a problem” is not the solution – you don’t start changing costly parts without more clarity around the exact repairs that have worked for others in the past.

Solera solves this problem. We minimize this delay, frustration, and potential churn in workforce with our Identifix DIRECT-HIT® software solution by combining “Confirmed Fix” statistics with a “Hotline Archive” unlike anything on the market.

Our Hotline Archive is a set of shortcut test procedures paired with OEM service manuals, wiring diagrams, component locations, and Remove & Replace procedures authored by our Hotline L1 master techs. This is the nation’s largest database of documented automotive repairs. When our hotline technicians help other techs in the field, the archive is frequently updated to capture in detail what worked and how. We have over 500,000 real-world, documented repairs supported by an extensive database of factory OEM manuals and specifications.

Example of a customer complaint that comes into the Hotline. Issue is likely solved by replacing a canister purge valve.
For this canister purge valve issue, a technician would follow diagnostic steps from the Identifix Archive as shown here to confirm this is the appropriate fix.

This Hotline Archive is tightly integrated with our Confirmed Fix platform, a crowd-sourced, statistical database of over 3 million confirmed fixes. These are solutions we know have worked for technicians in the field because, when they complete a job, they return to Identifix Direct-Hit  and report back to the specialist on “what fixed it.” All confirmed fixes submitted by technicians in the field are validated and edited by Solera specialists.

The Hotline Archive and Confirmed Fix stats are among the many unique values we’ve added to Identifix Direct-Hit over the product’s 35-year history serving independent repair shops, MSOs, and dealer service ops in the mechanical and collision repair industries.

Solera solves this problem. We minimize this delay, frustration, and potential churn in workforce with our Identifix DIRECT-HIT® software solution by combining Confirmed Fix statistics with a Hotline Archive unlike anything on the market.

Our Hotline Archive is a set of shortcut test procedures authored by our Hotline L1 master techs. This is the country’s largest database of documented automotive repairs. Every time one of our hotline technicians helps another tech in the field, the archive is updated to capture in detail what worked and how. We have over a million real-world, documented repairs supported by an extensive database of factory OEM manuals and specifications.

Furthermore, to make diagnoses and repairs even easier, Identifix also offers a Technician Hotline. Technicians can speak directly with our ASE Certified Master Level – L1 specialists. These experts have OEM-specific expertise and an average of 15 years of experience.  Technicians can discuss likely solutions, get a second opinion before installing a part, listen to an odd sound together, share live video on the customer’s end with their cell phone and our Rescue Live Lens tool, and get one-on-one instruction.

Another key feature is our Identifix Autodata Training platform. This is the industry’s most extensive catalog of technical training videos documenting specific repairs. Customers may choose from 60 online auto repair technician courses designed for all experience levels – from fundamentals to advanced diagnostics. We offer over 350 video training modules, including electrical, chassis, drivetrain, engines, servicing, HVAC, diagnostics, ADAS, hybrid, and EVs. Our personalized certificates provide documentation of your employees’ training achievements. And, since Solera is a global company serving customers around the world, these videos are provided in multiple languages (English, Spanish, and French as of today).

Consistent with Solera’s Environmental and Social Governance (ESG) priorities, Identifix also contributes to our efforts to protect the environment. In California, Identifix Direct-Hit is a state-approved solution providing information shops need to pass vehicle emission requirements. Facilitating both vehicle repair and the testing of emissions compliance, we’re reducing the carbon footprint of the automotive industry’s full vehicle lifecycle.
